American Civil War Museum - Wall Display Cases

The American Civil War Museum is a new 29,000-square-foot institution formed out of a merger between the American Civil War Center and the of the Confederacy. The museum sits on the banks of the James River and encases the ruins of a Civil War era railcar wheel foundry.

Aside from complementing the existing historical buildings and ruins, the overarching goal of the museum’s deceptively modest design is to protect a collection of approximately 16,000 artifacts, 550 of which are on display in 6,000 square feet of breathtakingly inventive galleries.

On display at the American Civil War Museum is an extensive and world-renowned collection of documents, books, uniforms, flags, weapons, records and all manner of artifacts pertaining to the period from 1861 to 1865, when the Confederate States of America waged war with the Union.

The Scope

Designed and built by Louisville-based Solid Light Inc. exhibit design firm, the project included a selection of large display cases with irregular shapes.

The design collaboration was key to allow for the insertion of a variety of graphic elements into the casework, with a series of colorized photographs leaping out from the display cases as if they were going into the visitors’ minds.

Challenge

The biggest challenge with this project was related to the installation of the lighting components into the cases, which was part of our scope.

A series of electrical components provided by one of our lighting providers appeared to be malfunctioning, causing several issues with the lighting systems within the display cases.

Our Solutions

The lighting supplier stepped into the chain of communications to better understand the situation and speeded up the resolution process.

Replacement parts were sent to the client, and the use of local electricians was a great solution to save on time and cost.

Solid Light’s collaboration was remarkable!

Their professional technicians offered generous and precious help throughout the resolution of the electrical issues.

In the end, the museum opened on time and within schedule, thanks to the great cooperation between all involved parties.
